Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The Workshop in Creative Music Practice module introduces students to a range of contemporary acoustic and electronic music practices, with the aim of developing each student's individual creative music practice. Composition and creative music practices from within and outside of oral traditions, both score-based and non-score-based, are explored.
Syllabus:
Students engage with a range of approaches to creative music practice, through composition, performance and improvisation, broadening their experience of diverse concepts, methods and techniques, towards the development of their own distinctive creative practice.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
Explore, reflect upon and develop stategic approaches to music composition and creative music practice. Develop a clear sense of individual creative process and artistic identity. Engage with and locate oneself within a range of composition styles and creative music practices. Develop skills in musical analysis, performance and improvisation. Increase capacity to generate and develop artistic ideas and concepts; develop the ability to express those ideas in the form of music/sound compositions and creative music practices. Improve documentation and recording sckills and develop a professional body of work suitable for publication, performance and recording.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Evaluate and critique one's own music compositions and creative music practice and those of others. Demonstrate awareness of one's distinctive creativity and the value of research as part of creative practice. Apply research strategies in the development of a rigorous approach to creative practice. Deepen appreciation and knowledge of various approaches to the structuring of both creative process and outputs. Engage in collaborative artistic practice with fellow students and mentors.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Skilfully perform motor skills specific to instrumental and vocal music improvisation and performance, and relevant movement-based artistic practices.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is delivered in line with best international pedagogical practice and is aligned with the UL graduate attributes. The module is taught through a combination of weekly group workshops, labs, practice-based seminars and lectures, and bi-weekly one-on-one mentoring. Through engagement with professional composers, improvisers and performers, students work individually and collaboratively to create a portfolio of work that can be presented in real world contexts.
